Why I Participate:

In December 2013, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I was 53 years old. My wife and I just celebrated our 26th anniversary. I had three wonderful daughters. I exercised regularly, watched what I ate, never smoked, and drank alcohol in moderation. I had none of the so-called "risk factors." But as far too many of us know, cancer can strike anyone at any time.

Fortunately, I was one of the few patients with pancreatic cancer able to have surgery. On December 30, 2013, I had a Whipple surgery at Thornton Hospital to remove the tumor from the head of my pancreas (along with a few other surrounding parts). After recovering from surgery, I received five months of chemotherapy at Moores? Cancer Center, followed by 25 sessions of radiation. I am forever grateful to the talented and caring doctors, the skillful and compassionate nurses, and the radiation technicians at Moores? Cancer Center who saved my life. I am still a patient at Moores? Cancer Center as the doctors closely monitor my condition. Follow up this year revealed new cancer cells at the surgical connection between my stomach and small intestine. On April 25, 2018, surgeons at UCSD removed the cancer and part of my stomach and small intestine. Presently, there is no evidence of disease. I have returned to cycling and swimming.

In September 2014, my wife Diane and my brother-in-law Kent rode 150 miles for Pedal the Cause and earned yellow jerseys for raising $24,000. The past three years, I joined family and friends to ride Pedal the Cause as a survivor to raise money for cancer research in San Diego. This year I will be riding the "Honeysprings Heartbreaker? 88-mile ride. This route includes a challenging, ?heartbreaking? 7 mile climb up Honeysprings Road in East County. My goal is to personally raise $5,000 to help the cause locally in San Diego. Please help me reach this goal by donating to Pedal the Cause through my fundraising page at the following link:

You can give with confidence knowing that all proceeds remain in San Diego and go directly to accelerating cancer research at the UCSD Moores Cancer Center, The Salk Institute, Sanford-Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute and Rady Children's Hospital.

Thank you.
