Why I Participate:
Four years ago I was feeling stronger than ever... surfing and dancing as much as possible with the love of my life, my husband James. My carefree summer came to an end when a routine mammogram resulted in a frightening breast cancer diagnosis. After a biopsy and MRI I learned I might have stage three breast cancer and had a mastectomy. After the surgery I was relieved to learn the cancer was stage one but when I couldn't lift my arm higher than my chest, I wondered if I would ever be able to surf or dance again. I worked with the dedicated physical therapists at UCSD and am happy to say I am enjoying paddling out on my long board and hitting the dance floor again.
When I was first diagnosed, the first thought I had was how unfair it was to my husband James who lost his mother to breast cancer when he was only 13 to have to face this again. I ride for the women who have come before me, like James' mother Sandra and my grandmother Margaret who both lost the battle with breast cancer and died in the prime of their lives, leaving young children and loving husbands behind. And I ride for future generations of women and men whom I hope will have better treatment options and maybe someday a cure for this dreaded disease.
It takes world-class research to create a world without cancer. PEDAL is committed to realizing that vision. Please help me in this journey by making a donation, and give with confidence knowing that all proceeds go directly to accelerating cancer research at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego.
