Why I Participate:
I am proud to join Team Chamorro Role for the 2nd year for Padres Pedal the Cause, with my friends, Elaine and Charlene. Pedal is a bike ride that raises money to aid in continuing cancer research. This November, I'm committing to ride 100 miles, and raise $2500! Elaine introduced me to Charlene, who created the team 3 years ago in memory of her husband, Chris, who died from Lung Cancer. At the time I met Charlene, she was devastated and grieving. I remember her telling me about Chris's battle and death, and I remember thinking, "I don't know how I would handle it if Mark was diagnosed with cancer and I lost him." I remember feeling so profoundly sad, and having so much empathy for Charlene. Fast forward to today -- Mark was diagnosed with Gastro-Esophageal cancer on June 7, 2017, and sadly lost his battle with his very aggressive Metastatic Gastric Cancer with Diffused Linitus Plastica on April 24, 2018. He died peacefully in the ICU at UCSD Jacobs Medical Center. I am heart broken and profoundly sad, and miss Mark very much, so I want to channel my grief into something positive, which is raising research money so the next person diagnosed with Mark's type and condition of cancer can be successfully and proactively to have a better chance of surviving. Moores Cancer Center at UCSD, which is one of the recipients of the funds raised from our ride, is a Ntl Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, and where Mark was treated. It is a world renowned training, teaching, research and treatment facility, which provides the most up-to-date treatment protocals to their patients. I am motivated for this ride and to raise money, for Moores Cas well as Rady Children's Hospital, and Sanford, Burnham, Prebys, and Salk Institute for Biological Research. I will ride for My Hero, My Love, My Rock Star....Mark, who fought courageously till the end of his earthly life!
