Why I Ride:

It is with great sadness that I inform PPTC that one of our team riders, Laurie Gerken, has succumbed to a cancer relapse. While she had been a survivor when she rode with the 2015 Team Salk Cancer Center, the cancer had recently returned. Laurie had been a Research Assistant at the Salk Institute in the Molecular & Cell Biology Laboratory of Reuben Shaw, a cancer biology laboratory. Dr. Shaw is now the Director of the Salk Institute NCI Designated Cancer Center, a beneficiary of PPTC. While life is fragile, cancer is not. It takes everything we have to defeat it and keep it at bay.

Remarks from our team regarding our loss of Laurie:

Laurie was an ebullient person, full of energy and opinions, and was a central player in some of the early days of my lab. She was diagnosed with cancer on her second day working in my lab in fall 2008. She fought courageously for years, and had many years in remission. She had left Salk a few years ago when it was in remission, but was still friends with people in my lab so this is all very close to home. - Reuben Shaw, Ph.D., Molecular & Cell Biology Laboratory, Director Salk Cancer Center

I am so sorry to hear this very sad news. This is why we do what we do, and ride this ride, let's do it for Laurie, and all the others fighting so bravely to live with cancer, or to defeat it. In solidarity - Geoff Wahl, Ph.D., Gene Expression Laboratory

Sad news indeed - Laurie was an inspiration to our team. Go out and ride for her this November. - Tony Hunter, Ph.D., Molecular & Cell Biology Laboratory

Let us all pray for her that she may rest in peace. We'll miss your laugh, smiles, and friendship Laurie. - Henry Juguilon, Gene Expression Laboratory

Very sad news. We'll keep her in our thoughts this Pedal season, and onward. - Mark Schmitt, Laboratory of Genetics

I remember Laurie for her warm and very positive personality. Always tough to loose a former colleague, especially one so young. - Travis Berggren, Ph.D., Salk Institute

She showed her strength when riding for others. We owe her a debt that can only be paid by our commitment to carry on her fight. So let us ride and raise the funds to beat cancer in our lifetimes. We owe it to those who have not survived to help others survive. - Jamie Simon, Salk Institute
