Why I Participate:
Annually, more than 600,000 Americans, and more than 7 million humans around the world die of cancer. Cancer is the #1 cause of death in San Diego and #2 cause of death in the United States. In many nations, cancer will soon surpass heart disease as the most common cause of death. 1 in 2 men & 1 in 3 women will develop cancer during their lifetime.
Cancer has personally taken several of my family members too early including my Granny, Leonore Doromal Tuck, my Grandfather, Charles Earl Johnson, and my Grandmother whom I never met and who died when my Mom was only 14, Elaine Hoisington Johnson. My wife, Kristin, more recently had her stepfather, John Kelly, taken by liver cancer and her mother, Tammy Kelly only survived a rare form of lymphoma due to a last minute, remarkable stem cell transplant.
Cancer has affected us all, either directly or indirectly, and if not yet it will someday. The good news is that I have hope and reason to believe that someday soon the combined efforts of cancer researchers, therapeutic and diagnostic developers, and patients choosing healthier lifestyles will drastically reduce the prevalence of cancer for current and future generations. To help with the last point, this fact from the World Health Organization is one we should all think about more: Around one third of deaths from cancer are due to the 5 leading behavioral and dietary risks: high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, and alcohol use.
I hope you will support me in this journey and consider making a donation, of any size. 100% of your donation will go directly to fund cancer research in San Diego.
