Why I Participate:
My introduction to leukemia came on August 3, 2014. I brought Hazel, our younger daughter, in for her routine 9 month baby wellness visit at the pediatrician. The in office blood test showed her red blood was a little low. The doctor recommended a full blood test (CBC) be done. Within hours of that test at an outpatient lab I received a call from our pediatrician. I was instructed to head to Rady Childrens Hospital for direct admission to rule out leukemia. In my gut I knew that meant they needed to confirm diagnosis of leukemia. Life as we knew it was forever changed.
We nervously waited for two weeks before receiving a confirmed diagnosis of AMKL, a rare and a difficult to treat leukemia in children. August 14, 2015 Hazel was admitted for her first round of chemotherapy. Our nightmare was becoming our reality. Within weeks our beautiful chubby blue eyed baby girl with a full head of soft baby curled dark brown hair was losing her hair. Hazel was learning how to walk and talk in the hospital. After two intensive rounds of chemotherapy (both month long stays in the hospital) the best chance for a cure for Hazel was to move forward with a bone marrow transplant. A donor was lined up and we moved forward with the next step in her treatment.
Hazel relapsed just shy of 2 months post transplant. For the next 15 months we tried every drug combination, trial available, and walked through every open door to get Hazel into a second remission for a second bone marrow transplant. Sadly we ran out of options and time. After a fierce, brave fight and a two week ICU stay Hazel took her last breath in our arms on April 26, 2017.
A cure didnt come in time for Hazel but by continuing to fight for better treatments and a cure our hope is that other families do not have to experience what we have. Please consider donating in memory of Hazel and help get us all closer to a cancer free world! I hope you will support me in this journey and consider making a donation, of any size. All donations will go directly to fund cancer research in San Diego including Rady Childrens Hospital where Hazel was treated.
