Why I Participate:
Why do I ride? I ride for three reasons.
As a biochemist working to cure cancer, I see the complexity of this disease (diseaseS actually). Every day I witness amazingly smart people doing great work to understand the molecular basis of cancer and using that knowledge to develop safe and effective medicines. In spite of this dedicated effort at pharmaceutical companies, universities and other organizations across the world we still have many cancers with no effective treatments and others where the treatments are very unpleasant with long term side effects. We need to do better.
As an individual I, like most everyone, have been affected by cancer. This year I am riding for my 13 year old daughter's friend, again, :-( and my brother-in-law. Unfortunately, this friend and family member are the most recent people I care about who are fighting cancer, not the only people. So I will continue to ride for many others as well, including my grandparents, my mother-in-law, my father-in-law, my sisters-in-law, the wives of two good friends, my former roommate's husband, mothers, fathers and uncles of good friends, co-workers and former co-workers, and all the other people that will face the diagnosis of cancer.
I also ride to challenge myself. This is my seventh year doing this event. Each year has been physically demanding and this year I'm back for the challenge of the really long, hard climb that is Honey Springs and the additional challenge of riding 100 miles for the first time.
Please help me raise funds for cancer research so we can realize a world without cancer.
Thanks for your support,
